Fear is one of the most common — and costly — forces shaping immigration decisions. In this episode, Carlos Batara examines how hesitation, rumor, and misplaced hope can delay immigration action until opportunities disappear. Immigration rules change. Programs expire. And the cost of waiting can be permanent. Drawing from decades of experience, he explains why informed courage often determines who moves forward — and who waits too long.

“The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid,” Nelson Mandela once said, “but he who conquers that fear.”He could have been talking to immigrants living in the United States.
Over my 20 plus years practicing immigration law, I’ve met many individuals . . . in fact, too many . . . who waited several years to move forward with their permanent resident cases.
Out of fear.
Hi, I’m Carlos Batara, with the Immigration Mastermind. Thanks for joining.
Some have waited too long.
Rules, procedures — and programs — change in immigration law. Quite often.
Programs sometimes expire after a few years.
This means persons who were eligible under such a program are out of luck.
Why do immigrants delay?
Why do immigrants procrastinate?
Usually, it’s because they’ve seen the news. Heard the radio. Read a post on social media. About an immigrant who experienced a negative outcome.
They do not seek out opinions from immigration experts.
They simply assume they’ll suffer a similar fate.
But without talking to an attorney knowledgeable about such matters, how can immigrants and their family members discover what’s fact — and what’s fiction?
Other times, delay is based on a hope that a political cure will emerge. A cure that will protect them from family separation and offer a sure-fire road to residency.
Yet how will one know if a cure is really a cure — without hidden pitfalls — again without seeking out more information?
As Mandela said, the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid. Rather, it’s the person who conquers that fear.
Seek out a professional opinion. Today. Or later this week.
Come out of the immigration darkness.
Conquer your fear.
You might learn a pleasant surprise or two.
Thanks for listening. And remember to always keep your chin up no matter how hard the road ahead seems. Because together we can make the world a better place one immigrant at a time.
Why This Matters
Immigration law does not stand still. Programs evolve. Fear often leads to delays and not taking action. Policies shift. Opportunities close.
Mustering the courage to reach out and understand the immigration system is often the first step toward overcoming fear and delay.
